Process: Making the Medical Kit

I started off buying a meter of brown cotton, I the lined my bottles up and measured the length, width and depth. I then made a pattern using my measurements and multiplied it by 3. I also made a pattern for the middle flaps, which was half the width and ⅓ of the length of the whole kit. I then proceeded to pin on the pattern and cut it out. After I put them back to back so the inside was on the outside and started to pin and sew the kit up starting with the middle flaps.

Leaving one bottom seam open I used some spray mount to stick some cotton wool on the inside so it wouldn’t bunch up or move, I then turned the kit out and used some more spray mount to put some cardboard into the middle section of the kit where the bottles will be held. Then I sewed up the last seam with the black ribbon in the centre. I then aged the button by scraping sandpaper over it and sew the button just above the ribbon.   

 I got some regular elastic and dyed it using coffee, and then I marked out where to sew by putting the bottles down and marking it with a pin. I made sure to stretch the elastic around the bottles so that they wouldn’t fall out. After I had pinned it all I sewed the elastic on I did the same for the separate equipment like the scissors and twisters.

To make the white circle and red cross I used the outline of a masking tape roll, and used acrylic paint, to make it smooth I went over the top with some sandpaper. I then made it look older by going over the fabric with sandpaper and a file, and then I got some coffee to stain the fabric and also mixed some silver and black paint and dry brush it across the fabric.

Process: Making the Bandage Packets

I first got some standard calico that I could make my packets out of, and then got started on my labels. I was going to do the labels on Photoshop, but after thinking about it, I am very new at Photoshop and found I could create the same thing using a normal word document, that way I could do it at university and at home.

I started with writing the labels I had researched out normally on word, and then started playing with the fonts so I found the right ones. The paper one I printed off normally and aged the paper by ripping, burning and coffee staining the paper.

The fabric printed one I used some freezer paper ironed onto the fabric that then goes through my normal printer. I used some Fixative to keep the ink from running. I then aged it using coffee; I then sewed up the packets leaving one side open. Then padded both of the packs with cotton wool and finished sewing up.

INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP:

Today we had our first Photoshop lesson, we learnt how to fix pictures and get colour balance right in a photograph. We also learnt how to get rid of unwanted things by using the cloning stamp and healing tool.  

Friday 30^th September

In this lesson we learnt about layers. We cut out a necklace from one picture and resized it and placed it onto another picture.

Friday 7^th October

In today’s lesson we learnt how to do different filters and placing.

Friday 14^th October

Today we took pictures on Photoboof and distorted them. We then learnt how to take that image and place it onto another image.

In our last lesson of Photoshop we recapped everything we had done and had a play.

Bottles, pills and labels

Process: Bottles, pills and labels

I got the old bottles when my boyfriend and I bought them from a car boot sale, when he thought they would be perfect for my project. I also bought some of my bottles I made the bottles look older by scratching down the caped ones with sandpaper, the others already had corks. To get the grubby grimy look I got some sand and mud, and wetted the inside of the bottles and shook the mud and sand around inside.

In one of the bottles are some pills that I made out of Giotto Plastiroc, which is clay that dries in the air. I used a pen lid to get the roundness of the pills and a ruler to make the indent on the top. I waited for them to dry, and then painted them white, giving them 2-3 coats of paint. After they had dried I then added them to the bottle.

For the labels I researched some old medicine bottles and their labels and made a replica of the Sloans label then proceeded to come up with my own label.

Sloans: to make this I opened a word document and using text boxes to organise where the text was placed I wrote what was on the bottle, and then fiddled around with the text fonts and sizes. To make the red line with white lettering I made the text box red and the writing white. And the lines on the sides I used the shape tool.

Dr Hunts: is my own design and creation, after making the Sloans label I decided that I wanted to make my own. I used my boyfriends as my model.  As he had said jokily “why don’t you make one for me? It can be called Dr Hunts Hemp Tincture”, so I did. I got a picture of him as well to use as the logo which I inserted into a circle shape which made the picture circle.

Lastly I ripped them a little and then stuck them onto the bottles I then aged them using some coffee. Job done, some old looking bottles, pills and labels.     

Making Bread and Cheese

Demonstration: Making Bread and Cheese

First of all I got a block of polystyrene and drew my outline on the top.

 I used a snap off knife to then cut out a rough outline. I then got the straight file to get the basic round shape of the bread, and then I used the sand paper to smooth the edges.

 After doing that I used the round file to make the groves of the bread, then using the sandpaper I smoothed the harsh edges of the groves.

 After making sure my work area is cleaned off I laid down some newspaper and got some watered down PVA and cut up squares of muslin.

I painted the PVA and put the squares of muslin over the bread to make it firmer and give it a better finish. After it being dry it was time to paint, I started with a very light brown and dry brushed the darker brown over the top, mixed some whit in with the dark brown on the very top and let it dry. When it had dried I put a little PVA on the bread I sprinkled a little talcum powder on the top to make it look like flour.       

Then I did the same process to make the cheese.

Today’s seminar was to talk about the props we had started to make and whether we needed help with any of it. We talked more of what to make the props out of as well.

Demonstration:

Today Andy spoke and showed us about the different materials we could think about making our props with. He spoke about the different polystyrenes, how you could carve them and create loads of different types of objects, from fruit and vegetables to an iron.    

Chavant is a type of oil based clay that won’t dry out or crack. It comes in three types; hard, medium and soft. Plasterleen is very similar to Chavant just cheaper. Super Sculpey is like clay that can be used for detail work. Plaster which Andy made the helmet mould out of, and different types of wood.
